This in depth course covers a range of topic areas that will ensure that you can assess and identify when an older person may be at greater risk of a fall and the methods that can be implemented to reduce this risk. These methods vary, from assessing internal risk factors such as the bone density, neurology, cognitive impairment or vision of the individual, through to creating safer environments for older people through good housekeeping, floor quality, correct footwear and further safety precautions.
We all worry about what to do if an older person falls, and within the 10 sections this course covers, teaching on how to care for an individual that has fallen is essential knowledge for everyone. Equally, the roles we all undertake as individuals within or outside of the health care profession are outlined, alongside equipment that may aid an older person who has fallen in the past or to prevent a future fall.

An Introduction to Health and Safety
The Introduction to Health and Safety at Work training course has been awarded the Certificate of Quality and Merit of the Royal Institute of Public Health.
Having completed this course you should be able to commit yourself to creating and maintaining effective health and safety procedures within the workplace.
All too often, staff find it difficult to understand why they should see health and safety as an important issue. Unfortunately, it is often only when an accident occurs that minds are concentrated and action is taken. This course draws on Health and Safety Executive statistics to underline the very real risks that exist in what appear to be the safest of working environments. It also underlines the need to take health and safety seriously by making you aware of your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. By addressing your attitude to health and safety, and discussing in overview the type of risks you face, the course will help you to address health and safety as a real workplace issue.
Protecting the Environment at Work and Home
The healthy functioning of our planet's ecosystems - our air, water, and land - and the vast diversity of life on Earth is essential. To achieve this everyone needs to understand how they can avoid pollution and waste, protect watercourses, promote biodiversity and sustain natural resources.
This course will enable learners to identify the causes of pollution and waste, minimise negative impacts to the environment and enhance the health and functioning of ecosystems where they live.
VDU and Workstation Health and Safety
Having completed this course you should be able to avoid hazards to health and safety created by the use of personal and laptop computers and the organisation of your immediate working environment.
Many millions of people now spend all their working days sitting in front of display screens whilst operating personal computers. This sedentary lifestyle, and the postures and repetitive physical activity involved can cause serious health problems in both the long and short term. By learning how to adopt a safe seating position and posture, and how to correctly adjust and operate the equipment involved, the risk of health problems arising from the use of VDU's and inappropriate workstation arrangements are significantly reduced.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 place significant responsibilities upon employers for the health and safety of their staff. This course will enable you to take positive action in respect of your own health and safety, so making compliance with the law easier and more effective for the organisation.
Fire Safety and Evacuation
Having completed this course you should be able to take the steps necessary to prevent fire in the workplace, and deal with it effectively should it occur.
Fire is probably the biggest risk to life that most people face in the workplace. It is, therefore, amazing that many people have little or no idea about the common causes of fire how to deal with it and how to escape safely from the scene, should one occur. This course deals with all three of these vital subjects, and successful completion of the course could literally be the difference between life and death.
The Fire Regulations place stringent responsibilities upon employers aimed at ensuring both fire prevention, and the safe evacuation of employees in the event of a fire. This course will ensure that you have the necessary knowledge to play your part in cooperating with their employer in the implementation of fire safety in the workplace.
Safe Manual Handling
Having completed this course you should be able to adopt the attitudes, procedures and techniques necessary to safely lift and handle loads of all types.
Around 36% of the reported injuries at work leading to absences of over 3 days are attributed to load handling accidents. This is highly significant for you, since such accidents and absences lead to potential loss of earnings, missed opportunities and usually significant pain or discomfort. By covering the relevant physiology and how to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of injury in different work environments, this course will help you to avoid joining future Health and Safety Executive injury statistics.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to remove or, where this is not possible, reduce the risks arising from manual handling tasks. Successful completion of this course will enable you to assess risks and adopt safe working practices in line with the requirements of the Regulations
Avoiding Slips Trips and Falls
he Health and Safety Executive states that over one third of all major injuries reported to them each year is the result of a trip leading to a fall. Slips and trips are the most common cause of non-fatal major injuries in both the manufacturing and service industries, and account for over half of all reported injuries to members of the public on business premises. These statistics provide powerful proof of the dangers presented by trips and falls and this course will enable you to protect yourself, colleagues and visitors in your workplace.
The cost of slips, trips and falls to employers is around £300,000,000 every year in lost production and associated costs. This is a massive expense to industry and commerce that could be better spent increasing profits, improving staff benefits and boosting the economy. This course is a crucial first step in making the workplace safer, and creating accident-related cost-savings for your organisation.
Managing and Handling Stress at Work
The causes of stress are many, and this course explores those most commonly found in the workplace. The solutions to stress are equally diverse, and are dependent on the underlying causes. During this course we examine these causes and consider some effective approaches to stress control and prevention. You will, therefore, be able to recognise the causes of stress, either in yourself or your staff, manage its reduction or elimination and take steps to handle and live with stressful situations.
Around half a million workers in the UK report that they have been made ill by stress at work.
Stress is now recognised globally as a condition that can affect all categories of workers, in all types of jobs and living in all types of social environments. It is also recognised as a major contributor to behaviour change, psychological dysfunction and serious health problems. Stress, therefore, can have a major impact on both people's lives and the company bottom line. This course will enable managers and staff to handle stress and reduce the human and economic costs to the business.
An Introduction to Managing Health and Safety
All work places contain hazards to the health of the people who work in and visit it. In the absence of any management these hazards are uncontrolled and present an unacceptable danger to all concerned. The aim of health and safety management, therefore, is to turn these uncontrolled hazards into controlled risks. This course will enable you to do this by using a cyclical process of problem identification, solution provision and ongoing evaluation. Ensuring the health and safety of employees is one of the prime responsibilities of any organisation. Failing to do so represents a moral, ethical and commercial shortfall that can, and will, have disastrous results for both the organisation and the people who work for it. Managers using this course will be able to understand and implement a health and safety management system that will ensure standards, policy and processes designed to ensure a quality approach to health and safety in their organisation
Risk Assessment For Managers
Having completed this course you will be able to conduct health and safety risk assessments, and record the process and outcomes, in a manner acceptable to the health and safety enforcement authorities.
Since 1999, employers have been required to carry out risk assessment in respect of all significant workplace hazards. For some managers this creates a number of issues, namely how to carry out the assessments, to what level of detail and how to record the activity. Having completed this course, you will feel competent and able to conduct risk assessments efficiently, and to appropriate standards.
Failure to comply with the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999 results in prosecution and heavy penalties for employers. Such prosecutions rarely arise from any wilful intention to break the law, but rather through either an ignorance of the legal requirements or a lack of understanding of how to comply with them. By requiring managers and/or health and safety staff to undertake this course such problems are more likely to be avoided.
Manual Handling Risk Assessment
This risk assessment will enable managers and/or health and safety representatives to identify manual handling risks to health and safety created by poor technique, inappropriate loads or unsafe working conditions.
By assessing the risks associated with manual handling, you would be able to highlight potential health and safety issues before they result in injury or ill-health. The use of a properly constructed risk assessment means that there is no danger of missing potential hazards, and such hazards are presented to the manager or health and safety representative in a clear and objective way.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 place significant responsibilities upon employers for the health and safety of their staff in respect of handling loads at work. This risk assessment will enable your organisation to identify and deal with relevant health and safety risks at an early stage, and so aid compliance with this legislation.

Infection Prevention and Control
Rising levels of health care associated infection (HCAI) have gained prominence in the media and in politics, leading to great public concern. All NHS organisations are required to put infection control and basic hygiene at the heart of good management and clinical practice. All healthcare workers have a duty of care to their patients and preventing infection forms part of that duty of care. This module will help NHS organisations to fulfill their requirements because, on completion, learners will have gained an overview of the key elements of infection control, understand how infections might occur and how good practice can reduce their likelihood and prevent their spread

Introduction to Negotiation
This course is provided by Learning4Business. Having completed this course the learner will be able to:
- Identify and marshal his or her personal communication and cognitive skills for use in the negotiation process
- Prepare themselves effectively for the negotiation process
This course overviews the key skills of negotiation as well as the structure of the negotiation process itself. The part that attitudes play in successful negotiation is also examined, enabling the learner to think about the appropriateness of their current attitudes. The importance of correct personal behaviour, such as body language, is considered and the learner is provided with practical guidance in this area.
Achieving the learning outcomes of this course represents an excellent foundation for skill development which, when combined with the other 2 courses in the series, will place the learner in a strong position to become a highly effective negotiator.
Negotiation is a difficult skill to master and, very often, managers believe they are able to negotiate successfully when this is not the case. The result of this misapprehension is a mixture of lost opportunity and spoilt relationships. By ensuring that all those people who need to negotiate are able to do so competently, the company will avoid these pitfalls.
Presentation 1 - Preparing for the Presentation
This course is provided by Learning4Business. Having completed this course you should be able to:
- use positive body language
- undertake positive mental preparation
- prepare their vocal aparatus
- prepare the presentation content
- use the audience to enhance the presentation
- prepare the environment and resources
Too many managers, particularly the less experienced, believe that the secret of a successful presentation is simply to 'get up there and hit 'em between the eyes' with what they have to say. The truth is that, whilst the presentation style is obviously very important, it is what goes on beforehand that makes the difference. The course will help you make that difference by successfully preparing yourself, the environment and the presentation content.
Managers waste much time and effort by making ineffective presentations. This course will ensure that managers are properly prepared to make presentations that really achieve their objectives. Time is therefore spent constructively, and communications achieve their purpose.
Presentation 2 - The Presentation
This course is provided by Learning4Business. Having completed this course you should be able to:
- structure an effective formal presentation
- create maximum impact
- deal with difficult audiences
- identify and use the correct presentation media
Formal presentations are a critical communication tool for managers, and failure to achieve mastery of this medium results in a significant lessening of the manager's effectiveness.
By learning how to design and structure a presentation, then deliver it professionally, the learner will greatly increase their power to inform, persuade and influence.
In a fast-changing environment it is essential that organisations possess effective communication tools. Some messages must be delivered face-to-face, and managers competent in making effective presentations will ensure that those messages are developed professionally, and in such a way as to achieve the desired results.
Delegation
- recognise and commit to the benefits of delegation
- exploit the link between delegation and coaching
- identify and remove the barriers of delegation
- identify opportunities for delegation
- successfully undertake the delegation process
- insufficient time to manage effectively
- de-motivated and apparently undervalued staff
- constant management supervision of staff
- under-skilled individuals
Whilst these problems can be caused by a number of factors, at least one of the solutions is delegation. This is because team members can undertake many non-critical tasks and feel valued as a result of the added responsibility. Also, providing the tasks are well chosen, the team members develop additional skills, and become more self-reliant as a result of newly found confidence. If a manager is delegating successfully, the spin-off benefits for the organisation are significant, and include:
- a better managed business
- higher productivity
- more innovation
- enhanced market competiveness
- impact on bottom line profit

An Overview of Diversity and Discrimination
Having completed this course, you will understand the issues surrounding discrimination, and recognise the benefits of diversity within the workplace. You will also be able to identify and avoid discrimination, whilst actively encouraging diversity and fostering the emerging benefits.
Many employees, whilst attempting diversity in the workplace, do so in a somewhat fatalistic manner - 'that's just the way things are'. This course will help them to understand that diversity is not just a fact of life; it is a positive benefit, enhancing the workplace with new skills, attitudes and ideas. The contrast drawn between a new, exciting and positive age of diversity and the old, depressing and negative age of discrimination is a sharp one that will help you to focus clearly on why you should become involved in fostering equal opportunity in your workplace.
Creating and implementing an effective equal opportunities policy is vital to any employer, large or small. Having a policy that actually works depends heavily on possessing a workforce that is committed to that policy, and understands the benefits that emerge from it. The course will contribute in a major way to the education of the workforce and to the creation of positive attitudes towards diversity
Applying Equal Opportunities in the Workplace - Recruitment and Selection
Having completed this course you will, on returning to your job role, be able to apply an appropriate equal opportunities approach to each stage of recruitment and selection, so avoiding discrimination and bias. It is essential that managers, and the equal opportunities policies of an organisation, ensure that each stage of the recruitment and selection process avoids discrimination and bias.
Having achieved the learning outcomes of the course, you will ensure that both new recruits, and employees seeking promotion, are given the same opportunities for selection and advancement irrespective of their age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, marrital status or disability. This means that not only will you avoid problems resulting from contravening the law but, if you have management responsibility, you will also be perceived as open, enlightened and progressive in your attitudes.
Creating and implementing an effective equal opportunities policy is vital to any employer, large or small. Having the right policy means compliance with increasingly complex maze of legislation but, more importantly, it indicates an employer who genuinely wishes to treat all its employees fairly, as well as accept appropriate social responsibility

Applying Equal Opportunities in the Workplace - Training and Performance Development
Assuming that all aspects of the recruitment and selection process are rigorous and effective, the end result should be that the organisation appoints quality people. The next step, therefore, is to make sure that the performance of these people is developed in such a way that they remain motivated and contribute positively to the business.
The detail of how this is done is wide-ranging, and draws on many different skills, techniques and development activities. This course, however, deals with one important, overarching factor in its achievement; the principles and practice of overlaying equal opportunity best practice across the performance development processes.
The Law and Equal Opportunities - Age Discrimination
Until October 2006 there was no such thing in law as age discrimination. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006, however, changed that situation and employers can no longer make assumptions about older people's ability to do a good job or younger people's lack of experience.
By 2020 there will be nearly 25 million people over the age of 50 in the UK. It is, therefore, crucial that everyone, whatever their role in the organisation, knows how equality of opportunity applies in respect of age. Equally, it is important that the implications of thoughtless actions or words are clearly understood.
This course will enable learners to identify key features of current UK law in respect of age discrimination and apply them in a positive and constructive manner.
Preventing Bullying in the Workplace
Bullying is responsible for 30% - 50% of all stress-related illness in the workplace and costs employers up to £2 billion in lost revenue every year.
A lack of recognition and acceptance of workplace bullying results in costly damage to both individuals and organisations.
One of the most widely accepted ways of reducing the risk of bullying is to raise employee awareness and provide appropriate training on how to recognise and address it. 'Preventing Bullying in the Workplace' can play an important part in your anti-bullying strategy by raising awareness and understanding about what constitutes bullying behaviour, what causes it and what can be done about it

This module will provide underpinning knowledge on maintaining the health of sports turf. It is mapped to the N/SVQ Level 2 Sports Turf unit and would also be of benefit to National Certifcate learners.
The full N/SVQ qualification shows that the holder can perform a range of greenkeeping tasks, some of which are complex and not routine, and that the holder is capable of working alone or as part of a team.
Managing Stress and Pressure
This module is all about how, by gaining understanding of what stress and pressure are and what factors affect them, you can have an influence on the wellbeing of your team. Prevention is always better than a cure, so if you understand how the body works you can begin to take active steps to promote positive wellbeing and minimise the effects of stress.
The module educates managers on how to manage pressure in themselves and others and details the legalities and implications of stress at work. It looks at what factors affect wellbeing and cause stress, at how to identify stress signs and how they can be prevented.
Having completed the module learners will have gained an introduction to:
- What factors affect wellbeing
- How mental and psychological health problems can affect you
- Managing pressure and stress
The programme has been created by Wellbeing4business in partnership with the Virtual College and has been written by experts in Occupational Health, attendance and employment law. Main contributors were Joan Lewis, Dr Les Smith and managers and Human Resources professionals at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.
The training and test usually take approximately 2 hours to complete (depending on learning speed). As it is an e-learning course learners are able to work at their own pace, breaking off and resuming their study as appropriate. The system automatically tracks progress throughout.
Moving and Handling Objects
Back injury is the main reason for abscence from the workplace and one third of all reported injuries that result in three days off work are caused by manual handling accidents. In the NHS the situation has been particularly serious, with this type of accident accounting for 40% of all sickness absence, at an estimated cost in the region of £400 million each year.
Employers are required by law to take reasonable steps to safeguard the health and safety of all employees, one of which is increasing awareness about the hazards, and what can be done to minimise risk.
This online Moving and Handling module provides learners with the knowledge they need in order to reduce the chance of incurring an injury whilst moving loads in their work environment. Three main areas are covered:
- Moving and handling and the Law - i.e. the drivers for ensuring you know what you should, and what you and your employers' responsibilities are
- The spine and back care - structure and function of the spine, what can go wrong and how to avoid it happening
- Moving and Handling Objects - all you need to know to do this safely, e.g. training, risk assessments, equipments, appropriate lifting techniques
Having completed the module, learners will be better equipped to move and handle objects safely.
